Suggestions on motor controller

Postby marcusbarnet » Mon Oct 17, 2011 12:49 pm

I want to use one of your motor controllers to control my DC motors and i'd like to receive some suggestions from you before to buy them.

At the moment, i have the situation showed in the image below.
Image

I have a mobile cart with four DC motors with these data (the motors are all the same):

V: 24V
A: 40A
P: 1000W

Which is the most suitable motor controller for this application?
Can I use one motor controller to control two coupled motors? In this way I use two controller: one for each side ( a controller for 1 and 3 and another one for 2 and 4).
Or I have to use four motor controllers?

Thanks a lot to everyone.

I think two of the RD03 are close to what you are looking for, they come with a 125mm diameter wheel. You can control two motors with one MD49 (kit includes MD49, two motors, brackets and wheels).

Power of the EMG49 is rated at a maximum of 80W: http://www.robot-electronics.co.uk/htm/emg49.htm this figure however takes into account 50% efficiency of the motors. I think its likely that you are around the 120W region at the moment from your spec.

Hi Chris, thank you very much for your answer.

I already have the four motors mounted on my kart with the specifications indicated in my previous post.
(I need to use them because my kart has to move on sands ground)

I just need to choose an appropriate motor controller in order to be able to command my four motors.

All your motor controller devices work only with your motors or are they universal?

Hi Marcus,

I have just re-read the original post and realised you probably meant each motor was 1kW, in which case we don't have anything to drive them. If the total power is 1kw then my previous post stands.

The MD25 and MD49 were designed specifically with the EMG30 and EMG49 in mind, there power regulators are based on the characteristics of the motors and attached encoders. The MD03 and MD22 are general use boards, although neither will drive a 1kW motor.

What is your project out of interest, if the motors are 1kW each then that's some serious power!

Yes, my motors are powered by 24VDC and they can take up to 50A from the batteries.

I would like to find a solution to control them but as you told me, your controllers can't help me :(
